Hello, I am Dr. Hong Myung-hwi, Director of Acupuncture Hyunginjae Gangnam Diet Korea.

One cheekbone may look more prominent in photographs even when the mirror seems unchanged. Facial structure is only one factor. One-sided swelling, chewing-muscle tension, head tilt, and distortion from a close camera can also alter the impression. Start with photographs under matching conditions and a jaw-movement record.

Review order

  1. Take morning and evening photographs under the same conditions
  2. Record chewing side and jaw movement
  3. Review neck posture and expression
  4. Sudden change has a different priority
  5. Frequently Asked Questions

Take morning and evening photographs under the same conditions

Place the camera at eye level about 1.5 meters from the face and take front and 45-degree views. A close lens or strong one-sided light can make the nearer cheekbone look larger.

Compare immediately after waking with the evening. A difference seen only in the morning should be separated from a persistent difference because sleep position and swelling may contribute.

Record chewing side and jaw movement

For one week, note the preferred chewing side, hard-food days, clenching, jaw tightness, and clicking. Greater use of one chewing muscle can change the appearance below the cheekbone and along the jaw.

Open the mouth slowly and note whether the chin shifts, hurts, or catches. Dental or oral and maxillofacial assessment may come first when pain or restricted opening is present.

Review neck posture and expression

A screen placed to one side or holding a phone with one shoulder can repeatedly tilt the head. Include ear and shoulder height in a front photograph instead of cropping to the face.

Compare a relaxed face, a small smile, and a broad smile. This helps distinguish a difference present at rest from one that increases only during expression.

Sudden change has a different priority

A long-standing difference and a change that appeared over several days require different responses. Sudden facial drooping, numbness, slurred speech, limb weakness, or severe headache requires emergency assessment before a clinic consultation.

At Acupuncture Hyunginjae Gangnam Diet Korea, we review onset, photographs, jaw and neck movement, pain, and daily habits before explaining where Korean medicine management may be appropriate. Appearance alone does not identify one cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it facial asymmetry if only selfies look different?

A close lens and camera angle can exaggerate a difference. Compare again at the same distance and lighting.

Is changing one-sided chewing enough?

Chewing is one factor. Jaw-joint symptoms, bite, neck posture, and swelling also need review.

How long should photographs be recorded?

Morning and evening photographs under the same conditions for about seven days help compare temporary swelling with a repeated difference.

What should I do if one side suddenly droops?

Seek emergency care immediately if numbness, speech changes, limb weakness, or a severe headache is also present.

※ Causes and changes of facial asymmetry vary. Seek emergency care immediately for sudden facial drooping, numbness, slurred speech, or a severe headache.
