Hello, I am Dr. Hong Myung-hwi, Director of Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic.

Seeing one shoulder higher and the face tilted in the same direction can raise concern about facial asymmetry. One photograph cannot explain the finding without checking camera level, standing position, neck rotation and pain, and usual chewing habits. Before consultation, record how the face and shoulders change together.

Level the camera and body position first

A tilted camera or standing with weight on one leg can make the shoulder and face heights look different together. Place the phone at eye level and use a floor or wall line as a horizontal reference.

Compare a relaxed standing photograph with the feet parallel and a seated photograph to see whether posture changes the appearance.

Record differences in neck turning and side bending

Note whether one direction is more limited or causes neck and shoulder pain. Do not force the range; compare only how far you can move comfortably.

Record whether it worsens after prolonged sitting, whether morning or evening is more noticeable, and whether headache or arm numbness occurs.

Review jaw movement and chewing habits separately

Open the mouth slowly and note deviation, sound, or pain, and whether you usually chew on one side. Facial tilt and jaw movement do not always point in the same direction.

The jaw joint, neck movement, and facial expression should each be examined before deciding how they relate.

Sudden change has a different priority

Compare older photographs with recent ones. New one-sided facial weakness, speech difficulty, severe headache, dizziness, or numbness should not be treated as a posture issue.

Prompt assessment at an appropriate medical facility takes priority over a routine facial asymmetry consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does uneven shoulder height always mean facial asymmetry?

No. Camera setup, posture, neck movement, and facial differences should be separated.

Should I bring selfies or rear-camera photographs?

Bring rear-camera front photographs taken at eye level and the same distance, together with ordinary photographs.

Will strong neck stretching help?

Do not force stretching if pain or numbness is present. Movement should be assessed before choosing an approach.

What should I do if the face suddenly looks tilted?

Seek prompt medical care if it comes with weakness, speech change, severe headache, or dizziness.

※ Causes and responses to treatment vary. Seek prompt medical care for sudden weakness, numbness, severe headache, or dizziness.
