Hello, I am Dr. Hong Myeong-hwi, Chief Physician at Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam.

One eye may look smaller in photographs even when the difference is hard to notice in the mirror. Before calling the eyes different sizes, separate eyelid opening, extra lifting of one brow, and the direction of head tilt. Record the difference in the morning and evening, with the eyes relaxed and opened widely.

Separate eyelid opening from brow movement

When one eyelid feels heavy, the brow and forehead on that side may work harder to open the eye. Record a front-facing video with the eyes relaxed, opened widely, and reopened after closing.

A photograph with the brow lifted by hand does not show natural movement. Eyelid crease, brow height, and forehead lines should be reviewed together.

Check head and camera tilt

Tilting the phone or face can enlarge the apparent difference in eye height. Place the camera at eye level and record the front, 45-degree, and side views from the same distance.

If the same difference remains under matched conditions, include neck posture and movement of the chin center in the record.

Record fatigue, dryness, and contact lens time

If the difference grows only in the evening or comes with dryness and redness, record sleep, screen use, contact lens hours, and eye rubbing.

A daily record does not establish a diagnosis. Eye pain, blurred vision, or double vision calls for an eye examination first.

A sudden change has a different priority

A long-standing difference and an eyelid that suddenly droops today are not the same situation.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden eyelid drooping, unequal pupils, severe headache, weakness or numbness of the face or limbs, or difficulty speaking.

Without urgent signs, we examine brow, jaw, and neck movement and daily habits before discussing whether Korean medicine care is appropriate. Not every facial asymmetry belongs in a Korean medicine clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why does one eye look smaller only in selfies?

Close wide-angle photos and camera tilt can contribute. Compare again at the same distance and eye level.

Why does the difference grow only at night?

Fatigue, dryness, contact lens wear, and screen time may contribute, so record timing and symptoms.

Does uneven brow height matter?

The brow and forehead can compensate for eyelid movement, so they are reviewed together.

My eyelid suddenly drooped. Can I wait until tomorrow?

Seek urgent medical care for sudden drooping or associated vision change, severe headache, weakness, numbness, or speech difficulty.

※ Causes and courses of facial differences vary. Seek urgent medical evaluation for sudden eyelid drooping, vision changes, severe headache, weakness, numbness, or speech difficulty.
