When Fatigue Lingers After Summer: What to Sort Out Before an Herbal Consultation

“Summer’s over and I still can’t get up in the morning.”
I heard some version of that three times this week alone.

They had assumed the body would recover once the heat let up.
But what summer drains doesn’t refill on its own just because the season changed.

That said, the single word “fatigue” holds several different states inside it.
Separating those is where I start in a consultation.

The same fatigue, different causes

Among patients who come in with fatigue, three patterns stand out.

  • Depleted energy: heavy sweating all summer with poor meals. Even light activity is tiring.
  • Weakened digestion: cold food and air conditioning together, leaving a heavy feeling in the stomach. Eating doesn’t translate into energy.
  • Poor sleep: tropical nights pushing the sleep rhythm back. Sleep doesn’t leave you refreshed.

The three call for different approaches.
Using only tonifying formulas while digestion is weakened can become a burden instead.

So before asking what to replenish, I look at what is currently obstructed.

How we check at HyungInJae

An herbal formula isn’t prescribed from a diagnosis name alone.
Even with the same fatigue, constitution and daily patterns change the direction.

First, a review of daily patterns.
Wake and sleep times, meal timing and portions, caffeine, activity level.

Second, objective confirmation.
We read body composition with InBody, and assess your current state through pulse, abdominal, and tongue diagnosis.

We pair measurements with examination rather than relying on impressions alone, because the same symptom often comes with different signals from the body.

Formulas used for restoring energy, such as gongjindan and gyeongokgo, are considered only after this step.

How long you’ll take it — said upfront

This is the question I’m asked most.

For fatigue and low energy, we generally set at least three months as a reference.
There’s a minimum amount of time the body needs to recover.

Here I want to be explicit about something.
An herbal formula is not a better treatment for being taken longer.

For as long as needed, and no longer.
We adjust as we watch the course, and wrap up once the goal is met.

Setting a long course from the outset is not an approach I recommend.

Write down these four things before your consultation

To use a short consultation precisely, a record helps more than anything.

  1. When in the day you’re most tired — morning, around 3 p.m., or evening
  2. Sleep — when you go to bed, how often you wake, whether you feel refreshed
  3. Meals — whether you eat breakfast, how much cold food and caffeine
  4. What changed over the summer — weight, digestion, sweating, activity

I ask about the fourth especially.
What shifted compared with before summer tells us which way the body is currently leaning.

Just bringing these four notes lets the consultation start far more concretely.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Won’t it resolve if I just rest well?

Sometimes rest is enough. But if it runs for several months, or sleep and digestion are unsettled alongside it, it’s better to separate the causes and check.

Can a tonic be taken at any time?

The timing depends on your condition. Starting with tonifying formulas while digestion is weakened can be a burden, so we set the order after an examination.

How do gongjindan and gyeongokgo differ?

They’re used in different situations and for different purposes. Which one fits is judged after confirming constitution and current state, and it varies by person.

Do I have to take it for three months?

It depends on the condition. For restoring energy we generally look at three months, but we adjust with the course and never extend it beyond what’s needed.

Fatigue that lingers after summer isn’t something to simply wait out.
Separating whether it’s energy, digestion, or sleep makes clear what to do now.
At HyungInJae Korean Medicine Clinic, we confirm your current state through consultation, InBody, and pulse, abdominal, and tongue diagnosis, then explain the period and scope that are actually needed.

※ Individual results and recovery periods may vary. We recommend consulting a specialist for an accurate medical diagnosis.
