Hello, I’m Dr. Hong Myeong-hwi, Chief Physician at Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam (Acupuncture Hyunginjae Gangnam Diet Korea).
You start walking more to manage your weight, then notice pain at the front of your knee on stairs. It can be tempting to keep going, assuming your body is simply getting used to exercise. But pain around a joint should not automatically be treated as ordinary muscle soreness.
I value comfortable daily movement as well as the number on the scale. Starting exercise was not a mistake. The next step is to check whether the current amount suits your body.

- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Where does it hurt, and what changed?
Start with location. Is the pain around the front of the kneecap, along the inner side, or behind the knee? Pain at the front on stairs or when rising from a chair may be related to patellofemoral pain, but that description alone cannot establish a diagnosis.
Think about any recent increase in walking distance, squat repetitions, or training days. Repeated loading and a sudden twisting injury need different assessments. Mention a fall or twist early in the appointment.
I do not assume that two people with knee pain have the same cause. Checking swelling, movement, and past injuries comes before choosing a care plan.
2. Do not push through to finish the set
Pause before chasing a target. Stop deep squats or running if they cause pain, and avoid forcing weight onto a painful knee. Limping through a walk just to meet an app’s goal is not a useful way to continue.
A different activity still needs to be comfortable. The same stretches or strengthening exercises will not suit everyone. Avoid forcing the knee to bend or pressing hard on a painful spot to try to release it.
For a minor injury, a cold pack wrapped in a towel may be used for up to 20 minutes at a time, while checking the skin. Never put ice directly on skin. Cooling does not replace an assessment of the cause.
3. When restarting, pay attention to your response
Less pain is not a reason to jump straight back to the previous workload. Notice how ordinary walking and daily movements feel, and discuss the timing and scope of your return with a clinician.
Brief notes are enough: which knee, which movements hurt, and how much your exercise time changed. Include when any swelling began and whether discomfort remains the next day.
You do not have to lose weight before asking for help with pain. Recurring symptoms need assessment separately from a weight goal. I do not consider any single treatment an answer to every cause of knee pain.
4. Symptoms that put assessment before exercise
Seek prompt medical attention if you cannot bear weight or move the knee, it is badly swollen, or its shape has changed. A knee that locks or gives way also needs prompt assessment.
A red, hot knee with fever or shivering needs urgent, same-day care to check for infection and other causes. Severe pain should not be dismissed as post-workout soreness.
Even without urgent signs, arrange an assessment with an appropriate clinician, such as an orthopaedic specialist, if pain persists or returns despite reducing activity. What the knee can do now matters more than simply counting days of rest.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does being young rule out a joint problem?
No. Knee pain related to a change in activity or an injury can also affect younger people. Symptoms and examination findings need to be considered together.
Can I wear a brace and keep my usual workout?
A brace does not remove the cause of pain. Do not use it as a way to keep doing painful movements. Ask a clinician whether one is appropriate and how it should fit.
Will losing weight make the pain disappear immediately?
Weight alone cannot explain the cause or predict recovery. Avoid crash dieting or adding more exercise to compensate. Address the knee pain and a manageable weight plan as separate concerns.
If knee pain keeps returning after you start exercising, note its location and recent changes in activity. At Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam, we discuss symptoms and daily habits and direct you to appropriate assessment when further testing or another specialty is needed.
This is general health information, not an individual diagnosis or treatment plan. A clinician should assess the cause of symptoms and appropriate care.
