Hello, I’m Dr. Hong Myeong-hwi, Chief Physician at Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam (Acupuncture Hyunginjae Gangnam Diet Korea).

Hand numbness is not always a circulation problem. You might wake with tingling fingertips, shake your hand, and feel better for a while. When things seem normal during the day, it is easy to put off mentioning it.

I think it matters to separate the possible causes before choosing treatment. Instead of focusing only on tolerating discomfort, notice which fingers are affected and whether your hand strength has changed.

1. Which fingers are numb?

Location offers a clue. Tendons and the median nerve pass through a narrow space at the wrist. Pressure on that nerve can cause tingling or reduced sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger. This is called carpal tunnel syndrome.

Symptoms may be more noticeable at night or in the morning, while holding a phone, or after keeping the wrist bent. They do not have to affect exactly the same three fingers every time.

Numbness mainly on the little-finger side, or symptoms running from the neck into the arm, can point to other nerve problems. The finger pattern alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

2. Temporary relief does not rule out a problem

Feeling better after shaking your hand does not mean the cause has gone away. Numbness that once occurred only at night may start lingering during the day. Buttons or cups may become harder to handle.

Check strength, too. Tell a clinician early in the appointment if your thumb feels weaker or you are dropping things more often. Pain severity alone does not tell us how a nerve is functioning.

I give priority to checking for loss of sensation or strength before deciding on a treatment approach. Persistent reduced sensation or visible thinning of the muscle at the base of the thumb warrants assessment by an appropriate specialist, such as an orthopaedic clinician or neurologist.

3. Tonight, start with your wrist position

Keep it comfortable. Do you sleep with a bent wrist or tuck your hand under your head? Does wringing a towel or gripping a phone bring on tingling? Reduce activities that trigger symptoms and take breaks, without forcing stretches into a painful position.

A night splint is sometimes used to keep the wrist in a neutral position. It is not meant to squeeze tightly. Ask a clinician or a qualified brace specialist about fit and use. Loosen and remove it if numbness or swelling increases, and seek advice.

Massage or a splint cannot address every possible cause. If new numbness keeps returning or interrupts sleep, arrange an assessment even when it feels mild.

4. What to note—and when not to wait

A few notes are enough. Record which hand and fingers are affected, when it started, differences between night and day, and any change in grip. Mention neck or elbow pain, existing conditions, and the medicines you take.

Sudden weakness on one side of the face or in an arm, or suddenly slurred speech, must not be dismissed as a wrist problem. Call 119 immediately if you are in Korea. Emergency assessment comes first, even if the symptoms improve.

Recurring nighttime tingling and sudden neurological symptoms need different responses. Tapping your wrist or bending it forcefully at home cannot replace a clinical diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Could it be carpal tunnel syndrome without wrist pain?

Finger tingling or reduced sensation may be more noticeable than wrist pain. The absence of pain does not exclude it, but numbness alone does not confirm it either. The pattern and examination findings need to be considered together.

Should I try medicine for poor circulation first?

Not all hand numbness comes from circulation problems. Have the cause assessed before adding medicine yourself. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own; bring your current medication list to the appointment.

Will a few days of rest definitely fix it?

The course depends on the cause and degree of nerve pressure. If symptoms recur despite rest, or reduced sensation or weakness persists, seek an assessment rather than waiting out a fixed number of days.

If hand numbness is repeatedly waking you, pay attention to its location and any change in strength. At Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam, we can discuss your symptoms and daily habits and direct you to appropriate care when further testing is needed.

This is general health information, not an individual diagnosis or treatment plan. A clinician should assess the cause of symptoms and appropriate care.
