Hello, I’m Dr. Hong Myeong-hwi, Chief Physician at Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam (Acupuncture Hyunginjae Gangnam Diet Korea).

A lower number on the scale does not make every change a healthy one. If your periods stop after you cut back on food and increase exercise, check the cause before pushing toward a target weight. Your calendar matters too.

I don’t make weight loss at any cost the goal. Looking at weight alongside overall health means a menstrual change is also a reason to reassess the plan.

1. Check pregnancy and other possible causes first

Don’t assume dieting explains it. If pregnancy is possible, check for it first. Contraception reduces the chance but does not eliminate it.

Thyroid conditions, polycystic ovary syndrome, medicines and hormonal contraception can also change periods. Breastfeeding after childbirth matters too. A missed period alone cannot establish an energy deficit or a particular constitutional diagnosis.

2. When food intake falls short of the body’s needs

Fuel may be missing. If food provides too little energy for activity and basic bodily functions, hormone signals that regulate periods can be affected. Weight alone cannot tell you whether this is happening.

Consider whether you have been skipping meals while adding exercise, or feeling unusually tired or cold. Ongoing amenorrhea related to low energy availability can also affect bone health. Depending on the cause, restoring nutrition and adjusting exercise may be necessary. Some people need to regain weight.

Don’t cut back further. I value reviewing daily habits alongside objective information. The question now is whether your food intake meets your body’s needs, not how to speed up weight loss.

3. When to seek medical assessment

You do not have to wait 3 months. If you previously had periods and have gone without one for 3 months or longer, seek care. Repeated cycles longer than 45 days or recurring changes from your usual pattern also warrant assessment by a gynecologist or another appropriate clinician.

Seek urgent care if pregnancy is possible and you have severe lower abdominal pain, fainting or severe dizziness. Sudden or severe headaches and changes in vision also need prompt attention.

A clinician chooses tests after discussing your history and examining you. Not everyone needs the same hormone tests or imaging, and an article cannot establish the cause.

4. Bring menstrual dates and a medication list

Write it down. Note the first day of your last period, your usual cycle, recent weight changes, and changes in meals and exercise. Include the names of prescription medicines, contraceptives, herbal medicines and supplements.

Don’t delay care to complete a diary. Have the cause assessed before further restricting food or adding medication. Do not stop medicines or change doses on your own.

A Korean medicine consultation should also consider existing test results, diagnoses and nutritional status. Menstrual recovery cannot be guaranteed, and herbal medicine alone cannot address every possible cause.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can this happen if I haven’t lost much weight?

Yes, intake and activity can be out of balance even with a small weight change. That is not the only possible cause, so pregnancy, medical conditions and medication effects still need consideration.

Does one missed period mean something is wrong?

A single change does not establish a diagnosis. Check pregnancy possibility first. Seek care sooner if it happens again or comes with pain, dizziness or other symptoms.

Do I need to stop all exercise?

Not everyone needs to stop. The appropriate adjustment depends on food intake, exercise intensity and health. If you faint or feel severely weak, stop exercising and seek care.

At your consultation, share menstrual dates as well as weight changes. If periods have stopped, checking the cause and nutritional status comes before making the weight-loss plan more restrictive.

This is general health information, not an individual diagnosis or treatment plan. A clinician should assess the cause of symptoms and appropriate care.
