Hello, I’m Dr. Hong Myeong-hwi, Chief Physician at Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam (Acupuncture Hyunginjae Gangnam Diet Korea).

A burning chest isn’t always just a sign that you ate too much. If you lie on the sofa after a holiday meal and feel burning behind your breastbone or a sour taste rising into your mouth, describe those sensations separately.

I consider different possible causes even when symptoms sound alike. Upper abdominal fullness and burning behind the breastbone are different experiences. Telling your clinician where and how you feel discomfort can help guide the assessment.

  5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Heartburn and regurgitation: what do they mean?

Gastroesophageal reflux means stomach contents move back into the esophagus, the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. Typical symptoms include burning behind the breastbone and food or a sour taste coming up into the throat or mouth.

One episode isn’t a diagnosis. Occasional reflux differs from gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, which causes repeated troublesome symptoms or complications. Heart problems can also cause chest pain. A symptom starting after a meal does not prove it is reflux.

2. Check what happens after the meal

Stay upright. If symptoms occur at night or when you lie down, finishing your last meal at least 3 hours before lying down or going to bed may help. Start by changing the habit of stretching out on the sofa as soon as the dishes are done.

Fatty foods, alcohol, coffee and spicy meals trigger symptoms in some people. You don’t need a universal list of forbidden foods. Note what and how much you ate, when you finished, and when you lay down. Reduce foods that repeatedly coincide with your symptoms.

I don’t approach weight loss as appetite suppression alone. Digestive symptoms matter too. Rather than repeatedly skipping meals because you feel uncomfortable, identify the foods and positions linked to your symptoms.

3. Temporary relief does not establish the cause

Check your medicines. Antacids can ease mild heartburn temporarily, but they do not address every possible cause. See a clinician if you need them almost every day or symptoms persist despite lifestyle changes. A response to medication alone does not confirm a diagnosis.

Medicines such as anti-inflammatory painkillers may contribute to symptoms. Don’t stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Bring names or packaging photos of prescription and nonprescription medicines, supplements and herbal preparations. If you are pregnant or receiving treatment for another condition, speak with a clinician or pharmacist before choosing a remedy.

An assessment also considers when symptoms began, whether they wake you at night, and whether swallowing is uncomfortable. Gastroenterology assessment or testing may take priority. Korean medicine treatment cannot replace evaluation of the cause.

4. Chest pain that should not wait

Know the urgent signs. If sudden chest pressure does not settle, pain spreads to an arm, the jaw or back, or you have breathlessness, cold sweats or dizziness with chest discomfort, contact your local emergency service. In Korea, call 119. Do not drive yourself.

Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, or passing black, sticky stools, also needs prompt medical assessment. Do not wait until the holiday ends if swallowing is difficult or painful, vomiting persists, or you lose weight without trying. Treatment and recovery depend on the cause and your condition.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does one episode of a sour taste mean I have GERD?

No. Assessment considers whether it recurs, affects sleep or eating, and comes with other symptoms.

Do I have to give up coffee?

Check whether symptoms repeatedly follow coffee. Triggers vary, so reduce foods or drinks that actually seem linked to your symptoms and see how you feel.

If an antacid helps, can I skip a medical visit?

Frequent recurrence or an ongoing need for medicine still warrants assessment. If chest pain comes with breathlessness or cold sweats, seek emergency help without waiting for a medicine to work.

When consulting Hyunginjae Korean Medicine Clinic Gangnam, share when the burning began, your meal and lying-down times, and the medicines you take. These details help distinguish habits you can adjust from causes that need assessment first.

This is general health information, not an individual diagnosis or treatment plan. A clinician should assess the cause of symptoms and appropriate care.
